performed by Maxime Jean-Baptiste, Rachel Hansoul, Nata Mandaria, Sandra Muteteri Heremans, Fred Mutombo

In Search of Gilbert and Idrissa: African Students in the USSR — Performing the Past is a work in progress that employs screenplay as a research method to investigate the personal experiences of African students, their lives, positioning and negotiations with communist ideology. A supplementary storyline is added to the screenplay: a conversation between two generations of Rwandan women, represented by Immaculée, now on her deathbed in Kigali, and her Belgian-born cousin, Keza, who deals with the legacy of the unsaid. The dialogue unfolds within the context of diasporic life, with its Western perspective on history, discrimination, unspoken narratives and idealization of the past, and the lived history told by older family members through which to confront questions of choice and opportunity.

Sandra Muteteri Heremans is a visual artist and filmmaker with a background in art history and anthropology. Born in Rwanda and raised for the most part in Belgium, she is interested in the artistic and political legacies of the 20th century in today's world.
