For her S:PAM lecture, director Leyla-Claire Rabih will speak about her experience with the texts from Mohammad Al Attar. In March 2011, the Syrian people stands up, revolts, tries to get rid of the leaden dictatorship of more than 40 years. It is the beginning of an implacable repression, of an unheard civil war, of a fatal regional conflict which is still lasting. In the first year, the violence of the repression touched Rabih directly.
Rabih is French and sensitive to the democratic aspirations of a nation. She is also Syrian and grew up far away from the perfidies and the malice of a totalitarian regime. During her last journey in 2009, she demanded Syrian papers, identity papers, for a country she hardly knew, and the language that she is not very familiar with. Gradually, Syria, the Syrian revolution, the Syrian disaster appear in the center of her artistic work. When she discovered the texts of Mohammad Al Attar in December 2013 in the course of her exchanges with Jumana Al-Yasiri, the situation in Syria is serious, but it still permits to nourish the hope of resolution. Immediately, it appears indispensable to Rabih to assemble three of them in one spectacle to respond to the necessity to remind what these historical events and the geostrategic evolutions tend to wipe out: how it has begun. Which process leads a country from an uprising to a civil war ? She entitled this trilogy «Chronicles of an orphan revolution».
In Belgium Leyla Claire Rabih is supported by Moussem. Currently she is invited by the Nomadic Art Centre and KASK to teach a workshop on Syrian Theatre in the drama department.
BIO
Leyla-Claire Rabih is a director, translator and artistic director of Grenier Neuf. After studying literature, Leyla-Claire Rabih trained as a director with Manfred Karge at the Ernst Busch Conservatory in Berlin. For ten years, she worked as a director in Germany, alternating between subsidised German theatre (DT Göttingen, Staatstheater Cottbus) and the independent stage (Sophiensaele, Festival BBI Switzerland...), while focusing her work on the contemporary repertoire. In 2008 she created the company Grenier/Neuf based in Dijon and works on contemporary writing (Michel Vinaver, Virginie Thirion, Louis Calaferte, Momme Stockmann). She continues her activities across the Rhine at the Theater Konstanz with texts by M. Ravenhill, T. Buchsteiner or Lot Vekemanns, B-M. Koltès at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken in 2012 or Felicia Zeller at the Stadttheater Heilbronn in 2014. She works regularly with the national youth theatre THEATER AN DER PARKAUE in Berlin, with a theatre adaptation of "Pour en finir avec Eddy Bellegueule" after Edouard Louis (2017) and the creation of "Les Séparables" by Fabrice Melquiot in German (2019). Since 2011, in tandem with translator Frank Weigand, Leyla-Claire Rabih has been publishing director of the collection "SCÈNE, Neue französische Theaterstücke", which since 1999 has been presenting plays by contemporary French-language authors translated into German. She has been working around Syria since 2011, first with Lettres syriennes/Lettres d'exil, then with the creation of Chroniques d'une révolution orpheline in 2017, based on texts by Mohammad Al Attar
